The IPOLE-WPK Woodpecker Hole Repair System has been used successfully by Power Companies in the U.S. and Europe for more than 30 years to structurally repair woodpecker-damaged wood poles.

Wood poles that are used to support power lines are primarily loaded in bending. As a result, the wood is loaded in both Tension and Compression.  An open woodpecker hole attracts both wood decay fungi and wood eating bacteria. Structural repair requires that the repair material bond to solid wood, not to the decay. The decay and bacteria must be stopped to prevent further deterioration and failure of the wood.

IPOLE-WPK uses a Structural Expanding Epoxy Polymer Concrete (called “IFOAM”) in the repair.  Important features are that the repair be STRUCTURAL, STIFFNESS MATCHED TO THE WOOD, CLIMBABLE, and most importantly STOP THE DECAY, and DETER THE WOODPECKER FROM RETURNING.  The IPOLE-WPK Woodpecker Hole Repair System meets all of these requirements.

WOOD DECAY IS THE PRIMARY PROBLEM THAT MUST BE ADDRESSED IN THE REPAIR OF WOODPECKER HOLES.

Wood Decay is caused by two organisms; Wood Decay Fungi and Wood Eating Bacteria.

Research conducted by the U.S. Forest Products Lab indicate that Wood Decay Fungi Thrive in a Positive Ion Environment and Cannot survive in a Negative Ion Environment.

According to research published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology, Wood Eating Bacteria Cannot Live in an Essential Oil Negative Ion Environment.

Fillers

All liquid polymers used to fill woodpecker holes contain FILLER. This is what gives IFOAM it’s Structural Strength. These fillers will eventually separate from the liquid polymer.

With Hardener Cured polymers, the curing begins at the walls and progress to the center of the hole. The center is always the last to cure. This means that the center remains soft until the polymer cures. ALL UNREINFORCED POLYMERS SHRINK WHILE CURING. With the center soft, shrinkage causes the polymer to crack. The result is the LOSS OF STRUCTURAL STRENGTH IN THE REPAIR

IFOAM is a carbonated, expanding polymer concrete that DOUBLES IN SIZE while curing.  Because it foams, IT TAKES ONLY HALF THE AMOUNT OF IFOAM TO FILL THE SAME VOLUME OF NON-FOAMING POLYMERS.

Wood Decay Prevention

Where Do The POSITIVE IONS that Wood Decay Fungi Thrive In Come From?

THE POWER LINE’s Electro Magnetic Field (EMF).

Caused by “ELECTRON CONFUSION” resulting from a Phase Shift on the wire’s surface. THE MORE PHASES AND CIRCUITS IN A GIVEN AREA, THE HIGHER THE POSITIVE ION ENERGY THAT IS RELEASED.

Positive Ions are the result of ELECTRON CONFUSION caused by disruptions to the Power Line’s ElectroMagnetic Field (EMF).  THE GREATER THE ELECTRON CONFUSION THE HIGHER POSITIVE ION FIELD.  Electrons flow smoothly in a DC line.  In an AC line, electrons get CONFUSED when they are forced change directions approx. 120 times a second.  Addition of a phase shift creates a Positive Ion Field around the power line.

Is generated by the Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) in the power line.

  • In DC lines, the EMF is minimal as electrons flow virtually undisturbed in one direction.
  • In AC lines, the continually changing direction of voltage and current results in disruptions to the EMF(+).

Patented Molecular Rectifier Technology Protects Wood Against Decay. Just as a Rectifier is used to convert AC current to DC in an Impressed Current Anode, E-SAP is used to convert natural energy harvested from a variety of sources to DC current.  The difference is that E-SAP DOES IT AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL.

Proven Cathodic Protection Technology (impressed current anode). Impressed Current Anodes are used to replace electrons in the Steel (Iron) that are lost as a result of corrosion.  A rectifier is used to convert AC to DC current.

Electrons are radiated from a Carbon Anode through the soil to the Steel (Iron).  E-SAP uses this same technology to Protect Wood Poles from Decay.

IFOAM expands as a liquid to twice its unmixed volume.  This allows the IFOAM to contact the entire perimeter of the hole as a liquid before curing.  When cured it’s strength is approx. 2-1/2 times the strength of concrete.

An important feature is IFOAM’s high curing temperature, in excess of 300 degrees F.  This heat reduces it’s viscosity to less than that of water.  Confined, IFOAM’s expansion force and bubbling action forces the molten epoxy through the decay where it STRUCTURALLY BONDS TO THE SOLID WOOD.

IFOAM contains chopped fiberglass with a tensile strength of approx. 100,000psi.  During manufacture, these fibers become intertwined.  When the expanded the molten epoxy penetrates into the surrounding wood, depositing INTERTWINED FIBERS onto the inside walls of the hole.  The result is a HIGH STRENGTH FIBERGLASS BLANKET THAT IS BONDED TO THE INSIDE WALLS OF THE HOLE.

IFOAM contains E-SAP coated essential oil particles.  Just as with the fiberglass, these particles are also filtered out onto the inside walls of the hole. The result are Negatively Charged E-SAP particles, each cell powered by the power line’s own ElectroMagnetic Field (EMF), lining the inside walls of the hole.  This combination of ACTIVE Essential Oils and Negative Ions STOPS the Wood Decay Fungi and Wood Eating Bacteria and prevents them from returning.

Extensive shrinkage results from IMPROPERLY RATIOED POLYMERS, the result of filler separation.  This problem becomes worse when the polymer is cured with conventional polymer Hardeners that cure from the Outside-In (as opposed to IFOAM that cures from the Inside-Out).

Chunks of old wood poles or cross arms can be used to reduce the amount of IFOAM required.  This is possible with an EXPANDING CONCRETE SYSTEM as it’s expansion fills the voids between the chunks.  Use of wood chunks with non-expanding or shrinking polymers is not recommended as voids that remain between the wood filler reduce the strength of the repair.
